Measure for Measure
Director's Notes - Ginnie Sutfin
Sex and politics. These are not new issues, and certainly not issues just for our generations and those just before us. Elizabethan England was dealing with the same issues that we find ourselves confronted with today.
I have always been attracted to Shakespeare because of that timelessness with which he’s captured the human condition. It’s not hard to figure out why his plays remain so popular after so long—they remain true to us! These are not timepieces or living antiquities. The texts reveal to us more about ourselves then sometimes we’d care to realize.
So what drew me to the play? A bunch of very complex characters, some of whose motives are never clear to us. It’s a challenge as an artist, and as a person, to figure out why Angelo, Isabella, the Duke, Lucio, etc., do what they do. I have always believed that theatre is ultimately about telling people’s stories—but always in the hopes that in doing so we can find out a little more about ourselves. This play forces us to confront our own issues, hypocrisies, morality, hedonism, level of forgiveness, level of sacrifice, and consequences of all of those.
